Google Messages

What Google Messages does

Google Messages is Google’s messaging app for sending and receiving SMS and MMS, with richer chat features available through RCS where supported. It suits Android users who want one app for everyday texts, group conversations, photo and video sharing, and communication with contacts on other platforms.

Chat features

RCS conversations can support higher-quality photos and videos, typing indicators, and more capable group chats than traditional SMS or MMS. RCS conversations may also connect with compatible iPhone contacts, although availability depends on the region, carrier, device, and data plan. Some chats can be protected with end-to-end encryption between Google Messages users.

The app also includes spam protection and expressive options such as custom conversation colors and selfie GIFs. Certain accounts or devices may offer writing assistance through Magic Compose and other AI-based messaging features. Feature availability can vary by market, device, and testing status.

Device coverage and catalogue details

Messages can be used across supported phones and is also available on Wear OS. Continuity features may allow conversations to be continued on a tablet or computer, depending on the supported setup. These options make it useful for users who move between devices but still want their conversations managed through Google’s messaging service.
