Google Chat

Work chat for Google Workspace teams

Google Chat is a messaging and collaboration app for direct conversations, group discussions and team spaces. It suits businesses and other organizations that already use Google Workspace and want conversations to sit alongside tools such as Gmail, Drive and Docs. Users can discuss work, share files and keep project-related messages together instead of relying on separate personal messaging apps.

How conversations are organized

The app separates one-to-one messages from shared spaces, making it possible to keep private exchanges apart from broader team discussions. Spaces can provide a home for a project, department or ongoing workstream, while threaded replies help keep individual topics from being lost in a busy conversation. Links and shared documents can be handled within the relevant chat rather than passed between unrelated services.

Workspace connections and practical limits

Google Chat is most useful when a team already works in Google’s ecosystem. Its connection with Workspace services can reduce the need to switch between apps when discussing documents or coordinating tasks. Larger organizations may also use administrative and security controls provided through their Workspace setup. Access to some capabilities depends on the account type and Workspace plan, so the experience may differ between personal and managed accounts.
